HISTORY
The building is a notable landmark in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Constructed in the late 19th century, it originally served as a cornerstone for the city’s burgeoning financial district. The structure was built in 1889 by the Marshfield Savings and Loan Association, an institution founded to support the financial needs of the growing community.
Architectural Significance
Designed in the Romanesque Revival style, the building features characteristic arched windows, a sturdy facade, and intricate stonework, which have made it a standout piece of architecture in downtown Marshfield. Its robust design was intended to convey strength and stability, aligning with its purpose as a financial institution.
Early 20th Century: Growth and Transformation
Throughout the early 20th century, the building underwent several modifications to accommodate the expanding operations of the Marshfield Savings and Loan Association. By the 1920s, the building had become a central hub for local commerce, hosting various financial services that catered to individuals, businesses, and farmers in the area.
Mid 20th Century: A New Era
In the 1950s, the building transitioned from a savings and loan association to house other financial enterprises. The building was modernized during this period, with updates to its interior and the addition of new technological infrastructure to keep pace with the evolving banking industry.
Late 20th Century: Moneywise Mortgage
In 1985, the building was acquired by Moneywise Mortgage, a locally owned mortgage lending company. Moneywise Mortgage saw the historical value of the building and undertook a comprehensive restoration project to preserve its architectural integrity while updating it for modern use. The restoration included refurbishing the original stonework, restoring the arched windows, and modernizing the interior to create a welcoming space for clients.
Present Day
Today, the newly rebranded The Vault building is more than just a place of business; it is a piece of Marshfield’s heritage.
